Softube Modular Basic Package

Buchla and Moog started it all with their modular synthesizers in the 1960s. Doepfer made it affordable in the 1990s by introducing the Eurorack standard. Today, Softube makes the Eurorack modular synthesizer truly accessible for everyone with the Modular plug-in.

Softube is proud to announce Modular: A new cross-platform modular synthesizer plug-in that looks, works and sounds exactly like its analog Eurorack counterparts.

Softube's award-winning modeling experts have collaborated closely with legendary inventor Dieter Doepfer and the top minds at Intellijel to create circuit emulations of existing hardware modules. The resulting plug-in modules have been authorized and approved by their respective owners, guaranteeing that Softube Modular gets you as close to the analog sound as you can get.

Both effect and instrument, Softube Modular is fun, limitless, and easy to use. The basic system includes 6 Doepfer modules and 20+ utility modules, such as sequencer, mixer, delay and more, and a massive preset library will be included. Additional modules from Doepfer and Intellijel are available (such as LPG, uFold II, Korgasmatron, Rubicon), and more emulations from top hardware synthesizer brands will be released in the future.

“ Very impressive! I was making quite complex patches with modules cross modulating each other and the results were very close to what I get on my real hardware."

Danjel van Tijn, founder of Eurorack manufacturer Intellijel

A long-awaited addition to the Softube Modular platform, the 4ms Pingable Envelope Generator opens up a vast array of possibilities beyond the basic ADSR envelope generator included in the core Modular package. Two independent envelope generators can be 'pinged' by external sources - your DAW clock, for example - to define the cycle-length of the envelope(s) and generate rhythmic effects and interactions never before possible in Modular.

Fully licensed and endorsed by 4ms, manufacturers of the original hardware, the 4ms PEG expands your creative horizon. Create crazy polyrhythms for percussive clicks and beeps, or match the elastic wobble of a dubstep bassline to the tempo of your track with ease. Multiply the pinged tempo of each channel to fit two, three, four or more envelope cycles into each beat, or divide to generate longer cycles which still conform to your pinged tempo. And send the envelope generated by one side to CV modulate the parameters of the other. This module is fantastic for fun experimentation, and often results in happy accidents and creative inspiration.

I was very pleased to see that you kept the original PEG's internal sampling rate and that self-patched feedback loop patch also works on the virtual version!

Dan Green, Founder of 4ms

What the 4ms PEG does

With tons of routing options and CV inputs, this module makes serious noise even if it's not intended to make a single sound of its own. Try it and see.

In short

Two-channel pingable envelope generator

Use one side at a time to sync the rhythmic aspects of a sound to your track tempo

Use both sides to quickly concoct awesome generative rhythmic chaos

Detailed control of the shape of the envelope when generating drum sounds

Easily create some controllable motion in your textures

Adds hugely to the capabilities of your Softube Modular system

Buchla 259e Twisted Waveform Generator

The Buchla 259e Twisted Waveform Generator plug-in for Modular features all the digital waveshaping, aliasing noise and fold over frequencies of the original hardware. Enjoy the self-modifying, screeching, snarling responses from the original’s downright odd inner workings. The 259e is truly a unique addition to the Modular ecosystem.

What Is a Twisted Waveform Generator?

The 259e consists of two separate oscillators—Principal and Modulation—where Modulation can be used either to modulate the Principal oscillator or as a separate generator of audible notes. Furthermore, the sine wave generated by the Principal oscillator is simultaneously applied to two of the eight available waveshape tables. A morph voltage pans between the two tables and a warp voltage varies the amplitude of the sinusoidal (driving) waveform. Both these functions can be modulated by the Modulation oscillator. Three of the waveshape tables are actually not tables in the classical sense—they are simply portions of the 259e operating program, full of unpredictable noise and frequent silences. This is the innovative Mem Skew mode, possibly the most unique feature of the Buchla 259e. When these tables are selected, the FM controls are re-assigned to table scanning functions and the FM inputs become table modulators.

In short

While the Buchla 259e can certainly be used for more traditional sounds, it excels at creating otherworldly twisted digital sonic landscapes. Which is why it is one of the most coveted synth modules on the market.

4ms SMR Spectral Multiband Resonator

4ms SMR can process audio like a classic filter bank, ring like a marimba when plucked/struck, vocode, re- mix tracks, harmonize, output spectral data, quantize other oscillators to scales and much more. It’s deep, versatile and infinitely expands what is possible to achieve with Modular.

The 4ms SMR consists of six channels of resonant bandpass filters, all individually locked to a twenty notes scale displayed in the centre of the unit via the LED ring. All six filters can easily be swept around their present note scale manually or via CV. The note scales cover everything from Western scales, alternative tunings to more esoteric Gamelan and microtonal scales.

What Does This Mean?

This means endless fun! You can use SMR as an oscillator bank for additive synthesis, create beautiful moving chord structures, you can use it as a vocoder, phaser, a quantizer, a stereo-widener thingy, a CV source/arpeggiator/sequencer, a remix tool for extracting triggers from recorded material, a drum synthesizer—by pulse triggering odd and even for different rhythms—a basis for multiband compressor patches and just a crazy ass effect. Daunting? The 4ms SMR comes with 75 brand new presets which covers these use cases. Great starting points for further patch-o-rama! Oh, and its CPU usage is comparatively low, so you can add a large number of SMR units to your patches.

The SMR Plug-In

Softube’s 4ms Spectral Multiband Resonator plug-in is officially endorsed by 4ms. It faithfully emulates both the hardware and firmware of the original unit, with some minor alterations and improvements.

Doepfer A-101-2 Vactrol LPG Module

Organic, buttery, warm, woody, rubbery, musical, natural, acoustic—these are words that commonly describe the character a low pass gate module can add to synth patches.

A Classic Concept Extended
Originally, the low pass gate is an invention by legendary synth pioneer Don Buchla. Doepfer has expanded on the concept by adding clever features, not least the Resonance control which can add anything from a subtle nuance to screaming resonance, and further into self-oscillation.

Vactrol Control
The hardware Doepfer LPG modules are based on vactrols, just like opto compressors. The response time of these can vary wildly, which is part of the LPG charm. Softube's plug-in version of the Doepfer LPG adds the Vact switch which is not part of the original hardware. This lets the user select between a fast, medium or slow response time, to cover the variation between individual analog units.

Expertly Made Presets
The release includes over thirty new and inspiring presets that puts the Doepfer LPG to excellent use in your Modular rack.

In Short

Vactrol control of a 12 dB low pass filter and a voltage controlled amplifier
Switch between three different sets of vactrols—slow, medium and fast
Auxiliary control of output mode (Low Pass, LPG or VCA mode) via the G1 and G2 inputs

Softube Intellijel Rubicon VCO Module

Created in close collaboration with Intellijel, the Modular add-on module Rubicon, is David Dixon's masterpiece bringing a new approach on thru-zero frequency modulation into the Euro- rack world. Rubicon exclusive and individual tone is ideal for experimenting with FM synthesis.

The Rubicon is an analog triangle core VCO that is capable of through zero frequency modulation. It is a feature packed VCO with multiple simultaneous waveform outputs including waves that are multiples or divisions of the base frequency.

In Short

High precision emulated Triangle core
Switchable linear and (for the first time in any module) exponential TZFM (through- zero FM).
Linear index VCA for dynamic control of TZFM depth
Symmetry control (full clockwise is normal, full counter-clockwise gives reversed waveforms, centered the VCO is at 0 Hz) with CV
12 primary waveform types: sine, sigmoid, double sigmoid, triangle, saw, double saw, zigzag, square, pulse (center modulated), pulse (edge modulated), double pulse
Suboctave circuit with -1 and -2 octaves. (suboctave output is affected by fm just like the main signals.)
Soft sync (aka reversing sync) with attenuator
Hard sync with selectable reset direction (determines if the triangle starts moving up or down after a reset, very useful in LFO mode)
Pulse-width modulation and exponential FM with dedicated attenuators.

Softube Intellijel Korgasmatron II Filter Module

The Modular add-on module Intellijel Korgasmatron II takes its name from the classic MS- synth from a Japanese manufacturer released in the early 80ies, although it's more gritty and flexible than its predecessor.

The Intellijel Korgasmatron II was modeled in close collaboration with Intellijel. It has a completely independent six mode filter output on each side which are selected via a rotary switch.
It also has a special overdrive feature that enables the output signal to be soft or hard clipped depending on hard you drive the input signal. This is controlled via the input amp which starts clipping when you put the knob past 12 o'clock (assuming an standard 10 Vpp waveform).

The hard/soft clipping differances are subtle on simple waveforms sources and dramatic on more complex sources (like chords).

Just like the original hardware, the Intellijel Korgasmatron II can go from clean and precise to howling and agressive, from classic MS-20 type sounds to totally new territory, all depending on how you play with the front panel controls.

In Short

Dual filter + Xfade
Six filter types per filter (LP 1-pole, LP 2-pole, BP 1-pole, HP 2-pole, HP 1-pole, BR 1- pole)
Both filters track 1v/oct over 3-4 octaves (can be used as a limited VCO) Switch to configure serial or parallel routing
Output soft and hard clipping
Resonance soft clipping control (q drive)

Softube Intellijel uFold II Wavefolder Module

Made in close collaboration with Intellijel, the Modular add-on module Intellijel uFold II, is a wavefolder which allows you to shape the timbre of an oscillator, or any signal, in different ways. Everything from a subtle extra harmonics to total folded madness, all in one module!

The Intellijel uFold II lets you manipulate the harmonic spectra, going from just adding a few extra harmonics to total folded madness. It is versatile in the range of timbres you can get out of it, but still easy to use and well thought out.

The original hardware was created by Intellijel in close collaboration with David Dixon by looking very closely at how some of the most loved timbre shaping circuits worked in classic synth modules; not just in how they were implemented electronically but how they sounded and how efficient they were to get great sounds.

In Short

Fold control with a cv input and dedicated attenuator.
Thru-zero symmetry control with a bipolar cv input and dedicated attenuator. Stages switch to select 2, 4 or 6 stages of folding.

Softube Heartbeat Drum Machine and Drum Modules

Classic drum synthesis is back with a vengeance! Heartbeat is an innovative software drum synth with a familiar, yet unique, sound character. A world class effects section is included, as well as the innovative Auto Layer Machine which will take your beats to unexpected places. Because Heartbeat is more than a machine—it's a living thing with a mind of its own.

Heartbeat is likely to cause severe palpitations. It is the drum synth of your dreams, combining modeled analog synthesis of yesteryear with forward-thinking features and flexibility. The modeled analog sound engine, the Auto Layer Machine and the included top-of-the-line effects turns Heartbeat into a killer package for your beats.

The synthesis engine
While Heartbeat draws inspiration from the best analog drum synths from the 1980s, it does not emulate any existing drum machine. The sound mostly originates from Softube's own modeled analog synthesis, which has been augmented with carefully selected waveforms.

The core of Heartbeat consists of the eight instrument channels. You will find two different bass drum channels, which can be as punchy and deep as you want them, but are also perfectly capable of producing snappy and hard hitting woody textures. The two dedicated snare drum channels have six parameters each which allows you to achieve anything from edgy rimshots, soft and whispery snare rolls to machine-like claps.

The percussion channels are identical and can be used to model anything from 80s style synthetic toms to cowbells and noise drops. And just like the other channels, the hihat and cymbal channels offer flexible synthesis engines—tweak to your heart's desire!

The effects
In order to make Heartbeat your one stop shop for beat programming, we added a fully featured effects section. It includes slightly adapted versions of our beloved model of Valley People Dyna-mite and one of our top sellers of all time, the TSAR-1 Reverb. The Dyna-mite is a dynamic shaping Swiss army knife with a serious attitude. Limiting, compression, gating, sidechained ducking—Dyna-mite handles it all. And TSAR-1 is simply the most gorgeous plug-in reverb ever created.

The all new Filter Echo is a filtered delay effect with adjustable Cut Off and Resonance parameters. And finally, the output saturation can go from juicy to gritty and is not taken from any existing Softube product.

Each of the eight channels has a dedicated mixer channel with controls for volume, pan, ping-pong (auto panning), EQ (adapted specifically for each instrument) and send levels to the reverb and delay effects.

A mind of its own
Heartbeat is not only about sound, it's also about inspiration and interaction. This is where the innovative Auto Layer Machine comes in. The Auto Layer Machine has four channels that can each be used to layer sounds or trigger a chain of events. This can be used to create new sound textures or create automatic fill patterns in up to four steps.

If things still get too predictable, move the Chaos sliders to the right—these add an element of randomness, ranging from subtle variations to massive trigger-riot mayhem!

Flexible global velocity parameter knobs for volume, pitch, attack and decay can make Heartbeat responsive to velocity changes. Time Gate shortens the overall decay to create a stuttery and stiff machine sound.

No iLok USB dongle required
A hardware USB iLok dongle is optional for the copy protection of Heartbeat. Heartbeat can also be used with iLok's new machine based license.
